Thanks for the clarification. I think part of the problem might have been the "reconstructed dialogue" and imagined interactions between the prison guard and his wife. It certainly adds a little spice to the narrative, but unless one or both of them confessed to you their side of the story, there is really no way to verify that what you said happened actually took place, and thus detracts from your claim at the beginning of the book that everything you document in the book is completely factual.

Mr. Santos,
I am a Junior at a University in SC (Sociology/CJ Major) and for one of our assignments, we had to read your book "Inside". I found the book to be very interesting and I learned a lot and I think what you are doing is wonderful. I am actually a former detention officer and was aware of some of the things you discussed in the book. I worked in that field for 4 years and several people, both men and women, were caught having relationships with inmates. I may not agree with that but I can't say anything because who am I to judge. I looked down on it alot more until I read about your relationship and it made me realize that there is someone for everyone and you can't help where that person may be or where they come from. A couple of incidents in the book did shock me but it is good that you are letting the public know what really goes on behind those walls.

After reading about sexual encounters I'm getting a little upset. My husband has never mentioned this to me and he tells me a lot of things. Now I'm thinking what if he was doing something like this?? I'm visiting him tomorrow at Lompoc camp I can;t wait to hear his response.

I have to admit that this post made me squirm in my seat a little. I absolutely believe that a healthy sexual relationship is one of life's great joys. Maslow was right on about including it in his hierarchy of needs.
My discomfort doesn't lie with prisoners having sex per se. I am uncomfortable with sexual relationships between people in two very different places of power. Sex can be a natural expression of love but it is also often used as a tool in power plays.
