Michael,
First I applaud you for what you have done, rather than succumb to your enviroment, you made the decision to become a better person. Being from South Central Los Angeles, I know what gangs, drugs and the lack of education do to a community. I have seen too many young men without even a basic education turn to what they felt was their only ticket for survival:crime. I am writing a paper for my English Comp class enttiled: Recidivism: Education is the key to decreasing the rate of return to America's prison system. Could you give me your thoughts on why you think the political machine as well as the public are so opposed to even basic GED education? After reading some of your blog entries, I value your opinion on this issue. Thank you.

I agree with you on the power of education and its ability to shape productive citizens. However I am curious; under what circumstances do you believe education should be available? You provide evidence that it is worth tax payer money to educate people but to what extent? Should there be limits to who receives education and the level of degree they can obtain. Should someone who has a life sentence have the same opportunity? I am not trying to challenge your statement I just think answers to these questions could express your ideas more clearly.

I agree that prisoners should be educated. As a college student, I feel that education is valuable tool. Education can help a person find a better life. No matter the situation everyone should have the opportunity to educate themself. I feel that having an education is something that nobody can take away from a man. I am hoping that my education will allow for there to be growth and progress in my life. The Pell Grant help many unfortunate students to get an education, so I agree that it should be available to anyone who wants to increase their quality of life.
